A peaceful desk lamp concept evokes a feeling of Zen with its form and soft light

Lamps come in all shapes and sizes depending on where they’re used. Some are more decorative than others because they are meant more to enhance ambiance rather than provide illumination critical for getting work done. Of course, that doesn’t mean that these utilitarian lighting can’t look good as well, though they also have to be careful in making sure that usability isn’t impacted for the sake of aesthetics. At the same, you don’t need to go overboard either just to make a lamp look pleasing and distinctive. This somewhat minimalist desk lamp, for example, barely has any notable part aside from its lampshade, but it’s precisely because of its simplicity and form that it looks like you were raising a Zen garden on your desk.

Designer: Jang Lee Jun

For some people, desk lamps are an essential piece of equipment to shed light on their work, literally and figuratively, but they also need to avoid getting in the way of your productivity. That’s the primary reason why most desk lamps are simple, minimalist, and sometimes even bare-bones, providing light without distracting you with their appearance or eating up too much of your precious desk space. Fortunately, you just need a bit of creative thinking to make even a simple design more meaningful, like what this bonsai-inspired lamp tries to prove.

The bonsai tree is one of the more popular symbols related to Zen Buddhism, meditation, and calmness. The real tree takes a lot of patience to grow and trim, but simply seeing one is enough to give our minds peaceful thoughts. Not everyone can afford to take care of the real thing, though, so the Bonsai Desk Lamp offers something similar through its shape. The flat conical lampshade held up by thin metal rods is reminiscent of those bonsai trees, especially the Korean pine tree used for these decorative plants. It may not look like a real bonsai tree with multiple branches, but it could still call to mind those lush, green plants that our brains immediately associate with a state of Zen.

The lamp has one other unique feature that makes it more peaceful than most desk lamps. Instead of shining its light directly, it bounces it off the bottom of the lampshade. This creates a diffusing effect that generates a softer light without diminishing the lamp’s utility. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem possible to move the lamp head around to change its direction, limiting its movement to raising and lowering the arm.

If there’s one worrying thing about the bonsai desk lamp’s design is that it seems to be a bit unbalanced, with the lampshade carrying the visual weight of the object. It might not actually be lopsided, but even the impression of imbalance could make people worry that the lamp will topple over at the slightest nudge, nullifying the effect of whatever feelings of calm and peace the design is supposed to evoke.

1. The Sunne Light

Dutch lighting brand Sunne partnered up with designer Marjan van Aubel to create their first product – a self-powered solar light that harvests by energy day to light up your home at night. Called, the Sunne light, the sunlight-mimicking lamp gathers solar energy and is in turn exclusively powered by it. It aims to bring the power of the sun into your home. The Sunne light has been equipped with photovoltaic cells and is meant to be hung in front of a window.

2. Cozy Cleo Lamp

Based in Germany, the design studio EveryOtherDay designed this 3D-printed table lamp. It was created using recycled plastic bottles and cardboard. This sustainable product is a fine specimen of circular design and wholly embodies minimalistic design principles. Designed by Frederik Rasenberger, the lamp results from a circular process. This process involves recycled cardboard being pressed and molded into shape without the use of any kind of additives.

3. Charcoal Pilz Lamp

Designed by Jakob Tiefenbacher, the Charcoal Pilz lamp, is an all-black mushroom-shaped lamp that oozes character, and a ton of personality. The charcoal-black color of the lamp instantly grabs your attention, with its bulbous lamp head, and column-like stand amplifying its form. The Charcoal Pilz lamp seems like the perfect culmination for form, functionality, and aesthetics!

4. K Lamp ‘Remade’

The K Lamp ‘Remade’ collection was designed by Charles Birshaw and Vitamin Living, and is an intriguing reinterpretation of the iconic K lamp. It provides a second life to upcycled denim textiles, in turn creating a unique silhouette. The lamp is built from two single pieces of denim, wrapped around two plastic components, stitched, and connected together using a branded aluminum pin at the rear of the lamp.

5. Air Light

Designed by Contardi Lighting and Adam Tihany, Air is a newly designed suspension lamp that is 100% recyclable, functional, and also extremely decorative. The Air light is a physical manifestation of the exploration of ecological and design values. It features a dual lampshade design, that has the ability to produce a warm and inviting ambiance which creates an amusing play between light and shadow, using its engraved laser cuts.

This eerie table lamp looks like an eyeball but can easily adapt to your lighting needs

]]>

There is a staggering number of lamp designs available in the market today, each of them trying to address a particular use case or setting. Some try to cast their nets wide, but it’s sometimes difficult to have a “one size fits all” solution that doesn’t make too many compromises in return. Some people need a concentrated beam of light, while others prefer a more scattered glow. While it’s trivial to change a lamp’s intensity, changing its spread is a little trickier to pull off with traditional designs. This concept design tries to diverge from well-trodden paths to come up with a solution that could satisfy most, if not all, needs, and it ends up having a unique, eye-catching design that, oddly enough, also looks like an eyeball.

Designer: Julian Topor

Lamps serve different purposes depending on where they’re placed and how they emit their light. Ceiling and pendant lights serve to illuminate an entire space, while wall lamps aim to enhance the ambiance. Table lamps often give a more limited amount of light in their surroundings, while most desk lamps focus the light in a specific direction. Solus is a desk lamp design that tries to check off most of those boxes, at least without leaving your desk, and it uses planets revolving around the sun as inspiration.

In this case, what orbits around a ball of light isn’t a planet but four curved plates that can cover parts of a sphere that houses the bulb. These covers can move independently of each other, so you can cover parts of the sphere only while leaving other sections exposed, even if those parts aren’t adjacent to each other. You can expose at most three-fourths of the sphere, for example, or show only a quarter of the ball, making it look eerily like an eye.

1

With this rather unusual design, you can have precise control of how the light is distributed around the area. It can be spread far and wide by uncovering the majority of the upper half of the sphere, or it can be directed at a single location by covering everything but the direction you want. You can even illuminate different directions by leaving opposite sides open. Of course, the lamp’s brightness can also be controlled, this time with a ring slider on the base of the lamp.

Although the source of its inspiration isn’t immediately obvious, Solus’ unusual design, not to mention its color options, makes it a fun yet multi-functional lighting solution for almost any table or desk motif you have going. It might not take the role of a ceiling or wall lamp, but its flexible configuration definitely makes it worth more than a few single-purpose lamps. Plus, its odd and eerie design is a great eye-catching piece, pardon the pun, that’s sure to get friends and guests talking or even envying your latest acquisition.

Although a Nike x IKEA mashup would probably be unlikely to us humans, it’s well within the realm of possibility for artificial intelligence! These unusual, quirky products were created by an AI, thanks to some pretty great prompting from AI-artist ‘Str4ngeThing’. The collaboration features your everyday IKEA home decor, but with a sporty, Nike-inspired twist. You’ve got kitchen equipment, lamps, and planters galore. If there’s one thing worth noticing, the products don’t have a flat-pack-friendly design that’s common to a lot of IKEA’s products, but then again, an AI can only do so much, right?!

Designer: Str4ngeThing (via Midjourney)

Nike X IKEA Casserole Pot

The Nike X IKEA Casserole Pot looks like it’s taken right out of a sports company’s playbook. You’ve got rounded forms reminiscent of a kettlebell, although that beige-ish color makes the casserole pot look much more worthy of being in a kitchen. The AI does a pretty good job of making the casserole pot look like it’s made from enamel-coated iron, although the form feels MUCH more Nike than it does a Le Creuset. You’ll also notice that the AI messed up the handle on the left – a pretty common problem with diffusion-based text-to-image models.

Nike X IKEA Night Light

If there’s one thing I really respect Str4ngeThing for, it’s their ability to get text right within the image. AI tools like Midjourney often do a horrendous job with generating text within images, so seeing an accurate ‘Nike’ and the swoosh icon on the product really impresses me. You’ve got yourself a Gantri-style tabletop lamp here, with a similar warm, beige-ish colorway. A switch on the wire lets you toggle the lamp’s inner LED lighting, which fills your room with a warm, ambient glow. That debossed logo on the lampshade hits pretty hard too, making it a great collectible for any Nike lover!

Nike X IKEA Eco Plant Pot

The Eco Plant Pot is a pretty adorable cross between a Nike poster and a wall-hanging planter. Whether it’s made from concrete or plastic isn’t immediately clear, but it does look pretty cool, although it isn’t really for everyone. A Nike x IKEA collab is far more likely to have a niche audience than a broad one. What’s great about this planter, however, is the fact that it gives the plant a sporty personality, positioning it right above the Nike swoosh!

Nike X IKEA Clock Coffee Mug

You’re running late for work. You quickly grab a cup of hot coffee, and as you sip it, you tilt your hand over to look at the time. As a result, the coffee pours right onto you, and you’re now a burning mess. Nope. Not efficient at all. This quirky coffee mug comes with its own built-in clock that lets you time your breakfast or your coffee break. It isn’t the most ingenious product ever made, but in the interest of exploring something fun, the Nike x IKEA Clock Coffee Mug definitely ticks all the boxes! Although I imagine having a battery anywhere close to your coffee isn’t a particularly good idea.

Nike X IKEA Stoneware Plate

Here’s a perfect example of a product for a niche audience. This stoneware plate isn’t particularly designed for relishing a plate of pasta, but it makes for a great aesthetic addition to your table spread. The paleo-inspired plate comes with what looks like caveman carvings and a Nike swoosh on it. The textures on the plate are pretty strong, which makes it rather difficult to clean… but then again, I wouldn’t want to put any gravy or oil-based item on this plate. It’s more suited for nachos or some lavash bread that you can dip into queso, guac, or hummus.

Nike X IKEA Eco Plant Lamp

The Eco Plant Lamp is arguably my favorite product just for how quirky and attractive it is. Designed to look like an Air Jordan, this ceiling-hung piece of decor holds a plant inside its hollow form… but wait! That’s not all! The outsole of the planter also comes with a lamp built in, which shines light onto a wall or the floor, making for an INCREDIBLY eclectic piece of lighting that I really hope someone builds and sells on Etsy! I’d pay good money for this!

Nike X IKEA Hoover

Call this one Air Max because it sucks air with maximum power! This Nike x IKEA hoover sports a rather sneaker-inspired design, especially with the use of fabric-like materials on the clad, and what feels like a body and outsole-ish structure. I’m not really sure whether IKEA even sells hoovers (or vacuum cleaners if you live outside the US), but this particular concept has a certain appeal that makes me want to believe that IKEA absolutely could if it wanted!

Nike X IKEA Bluetooth Plant Speaker

This concept has my heart too, for its ability to combine two of my favorite things in the world – plants and music! This inventive Bluetooth speaker also houses a planter within it, in the interest of enriching you as well as your green buddy with some wonderful tunes. IKEA usually tends to collaborate with other companies over audio products (Sonos and Teenage Engineering), and this would probably be their third. The product has a pretty Bose-ish appeal to it, barring the fact that there’s a massive Nike swoosh running along the front. The AI didn’t imagine any controls, although Str4ngeThing did add a Bluetooth icon to the top of the speaker. Above it lies the planter, which allows your speaker to function less as an appliance and more as haute home decor!

Designer: Gingko Design

A bedroom is not just a place to sleep but also a space for relaxation and rejuvenation. Therefore, lighting is an essential element in creating a peaceful atmosphere within the bedroom. Proper lighting can enhance the aesthetics of the decor and make the space versatile for different activities. Incorporating different lighting fixtures, such as ambient, task, and accent lighting, can transform the bedroom into a functional and calming space. Additionally, layering the bedroom lighting can create a cozy and soothing ambiance. By considering options like ceiling lights, table lamps, or dimmer switches, one can easily customize the lighting as per one’s mood and needs, as it is crucial for creating a tranquil and versatile bedroom space.

Designer: Viktoriia & Vitalii Pukas

  • Ambient lighting is essential in any bedroom, serving as the primary source of light that illuminates the space and enables one to navigate easily. The ceiling light is crucial in providing overall illumination and can be complemented with additional fixtures, such as wall sconces or floor lamps, to create a more versatile lighting scheme. To create a soothing atmosphere in the bedroom, it’s best to use soft, dim lighting. This can be achieved by incorporating dimmer switches in the ambient lighting, allowing one to adjust the light levels according to their preference. Dimming the lights at night can create a calming and relaxing ambiance. Incorporating dimmer switches in ambient lighting is an excellent way to create a comfortable and versatile lighting scheme in the bedroom.
  • Task lighting is a type of focused lighting that is suitable for activities such as reading or writing. These fixtures are typically positioned near a desk or a reading nook to offer sufficient illumination for specific tasks. The most appropriate lighting fixtures that provide task lighting include portable desk lamps, table lamps, vanity lights, under-cabinet lighting, and pendant lights.

Designer: Nicola Cecutti

  • Accent lights are ideal for drawing attention to specific decorative features in the bedroom, such as a picture frame or a design feature. Lighting options like wall sconces and track lights accentuate the space and add a touch of elegance and sophistication to the bedroom decor.
  • Bring in plenty of natural light to create a bright and airy atmosphere in the bedroom. Also, sunlight plays an important role in improving the health and well-being of its occupants. However, it’s also essential to have blackout curtains to block out light at night to ensure a comfortable and restful sleep. By combining natural light with effective light-blocking curtains, one can create a perfect balance of brightness during the day and darkness at night in the bedroom.

To achieve the ideal atmosphere in the bedroom, it’s best to use a combination of task, ambient, and accent lighting. The different types of lighting fixtures include portable desk lamps, table lamps, wall sconces, and ceiling lights. Keep in mind that the color temperature of the light bulbs plays a critical role in determining the room’s overall ambiance. Opt for light bulbs with a color temperature of 2700K or lower for a warm and cozy atmosphere. Conversely, for bright and cooler lighting, one should select bulbs with a color temperature of 3500K or higher.

There is a variety of light fixtures that are ideal for use in the bedroom, such as:

Table lamps

Table lamps are an excellent choice for the bedroom, especially for bedside tables. They provide ample illumination for reading or engaging in conversations before bedtime. Having the switch conveniently located nearby ensures that one can turn off the light without having to leave the bed.

Portable Reading Light

A portable reading light is specifically designed for use while reading in bed. These lights typically feature a flexible arm that can be adjusted to direct light where it’s needed, and they are compact and lightweight. They can be particularly useful for individuals who enjoy reading in bed, as they provide a targeted source of light that can be adjusted to minimize eye strain and maximize comfort.

Designer: DelightFULL

Floor Lamp

A floor lamp can be a great addition to a spacious bedroom, offering both practical lighting and aesthetic appeal. When selecting a floor lamp for the bedroom, it’s crucial to consider the overall décor of the space and choose a shade that complements it and creates a cohesive and stylish look for the bedroom.

Designer: The White Teak Company

Recessed Lighting

Recessed lighting can be an excellent choice for bedroom lighting, as it provides soft ambient illumination without a visible light source. This type of lighting offers diffused light that doesn’t cast harsh shadows, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere in the room.

Designer: Velum Design

Pendant Light

Pendant lights are a versatile lighting option that comes in a wide range of styles and designs. Even when switched off, they can enhance the overall look of the room as a decorative accessory. Pendant lights can provide focused task lighting or soft ambient illumination, depending on their placement.

Designer: IKEA

Chandelier

A chandelier can transform into a striking statement piece for a large bedroom, creating an ornate and luxurious ambiance. Its elegant design can infuse a sense of grandeur into the bedroom. In addition to providing ample illumination, a chandelier can be a beautiful focal point for the room and add a touch of glamour to the overall bedroom decor.

Designer: DelightFULL

Sconces

Sconces or wall lights can be an excellent choice for bedroom lighting, especially in compact spaces where floor space is limited. By freeing up floor space, they can create a more streamlined and spacious feel in the room. Sconces are a popular choice for bedroom lighting as their soft, diffused light can create a cozy and relaxing atmosphere.

Designer: KOL DEALS

Ceiling Light Fan

A ceiling fan with a built-in light can be a practical and convenient option for bedroom lighting and air circulation. These multifunctional fixtures play a dual role by providing both illumination and air movement in one unit, helping to keep the room cool and comfortable. For added convenience, it’s best if the light and fan can be controlled by a remote control, making it easy to adjust the settings from the comfort of one’s bed.

Designer: Overstock

Swing Arm Lighting

Swing arm lighting can be a versatile and space-saving option for bedroom lighting. These lamps are attached to the wall and swing outwards, providing directional light where it’s needed most. Many swing arm lamps also come with an adjustable reading light, making it easy to focus the light for nighttime reading. The ability to pull the lamp from the wall while in bed is convenient and allows one to adjust the lighting without getting up.

Designer: Lamp Plus

Flush Mounted Light

A flush-mounted light is installed directly on the ceiling and creates a streamlined look. The light radiates in all directions, providing even illumination throughout the room. With its unobtrusive design and versatile functionality, a flush-mounted light can be a great addition to any bedroom.

Designer: Kelly Wearstler (LuxDeco)

By following the tips provided, one can enhance the overall functionality and atmosphere of the bedroom with the right lighting. Remember to choose fixtures that complement your room’s size and decor, and that cater to your personal preferences for both style and functionality. With a well-thought-out lighting scheme, one can create the perfect ambiance for any occasion, from reading a book in bed to relaxing after a long day.

How marble waste is reused to become mesmerizing eclipse-inspired wall lamps

]]>

When people hear the word “waste,” they most probably think of trash or rubbish that no longer has use, like leftover food, paper cups, and plastic bags. In reality, a lot of waste material also comes from production, whether it’s food, wooden furniture, textile, or even rock pieces. Marble, for example, is a much sought-after material for making luxurious-looking products, from furniture to decorations. Not all parts of a chunk of marble end up in the final product, though, and plenty is thrown away without much consideration of how they affect the environment in the long run. It might not be easy to work with unused marble waste, but this rather creative design reuses those pieces to turn them into parts of a wall lamp cluster that gives your space an unearthly glow.

Designer: Hadiye Ozdemir

Beautiful as it may be, marble isn’t exactly an easy material to work with, and its sustainability value is a bit all over the place. It’s a naturally occurring rock, yes, but extracting it and processing it requires a lot of energy and water. It isn’t an easily renewable resource either, but it is at least recyclable and reusable when ground and added to a concrete mixture or other hard materials. Reusing bits and pieces of polished marble as they are, however, is harder to pull off, and that’s exactly the feat that the Sole Lamp concept design accomplishes.

Pieces of thin marble, such as those used in tiles, are combined with resin in square or circular molds, depending on the shape of the discarded marble. This combination of marble and translucent resin serve has a cover layer for a circular LED lamp underneath, creating a visual effect that’s similar to a corona during a solar eclipse. On its own, this lamp design is already striking, it becomes even more impactful when combined with other pieces of the puzzle.

Horizontal and vertical wall fixing bars bridge the lamps together, either directly or with an intermediary piece in between. These can also be made from reused marble pieces, often in the shape of discs, that only have small or no parts broken off. Unlike the lamp parts, these are mixed with opaque resin and are used to create unlit segments that break apart would be a visually monotonous sequence of lights.

With an almost random series of lights and opaque discs arranged in a maze-like structure, the Sole Lamp provides not only illumination but also an artistic decoration for your wall. The light from the circular LEDs gets diffused not only through the resin but also on the wall itself, creating a softer glow that contrasts with the sharp light of the lamps. More importantly, the design concept also introduces a novel way to utilize marble waste and even potentially recoup economic losses from these beautiful but underutilized pieces.

Time travel, multiverse, and wormholes have been in the pop culture consciousness for the past years because of sci-fi movies, series, and books. Of course it also crosses over to other things like product concepts and design as people have become fascinated with the concept of other worlds and other times. Not only does it cause our imaginations to run wild but it also brings about some deep thinking about life and the universe. So if you have something beside you that is inspired by the idea of wormholes, it should provide not just aesthetics but also meditative thoughts.

Designer: Will Gibbons

This concept for a table lamp was inspired by the Einstein-Rosen Bridge and wormholes. The Wormhole-Modern Side Lamp uses the scientific illustrations of this idea and so the lamp is a representation of this “shortcut” in the spacetime continuum. From the lamp itself to the wire attached to it, the designer was able to create elements that support the theory and interpreted it as a transport mechanism for light, just like it’s used as a metaphor or a literal concept in sci-fi movies.

Even if you’re not familiar with wormholes and the ideas associated with it, it won’t stop you from appreciating the minimalist beauty of the lamp design. He used colorless transparent plastic and the light from the LEDs to bring about the idea of gravitational lensing. He also used multiple layers of film to coat the plastic and bring about a “multi-colored refractive light”. The electrical wire meanwhile is supposed to represent the path that an astronaut travels through the wormhole, like in the movie Interstellar.

What you get is a table lamp that can look right at home in sci-fi movies or in homes that have a futuristic and minimalist aesthetic. I wouldn’t mind having a lamp like this especially if the colorfully refracted light will help me sleep well at night or help me meditate on the meaning of life.

I love a beautifully-designed lighting fixture because I truly believe a really great one has the ability to illuminate a space – both literally, and metaphorically. Besides the physical light that it quite obviously emits, a well-designed lighting fixture can add manifolds of personality and charisma to a room. They can function as sculptural pieces, that are an extension of your personal taste and preference, truly exhibiting the richness and niche-ness of your curation capabilities. And if they manage to be sustainable as well, then they’re a design curated in heaven. And a lighting design that meets all of these criteria is the Air Light.

Designer: Contardi Lighting x Adam Tihany

Italian brand Contardi Lighting partnered up with designer Adam Tihany to answer a simple yet rather complex question, ” What is green lighting?” The answer to their question was their creation Air – a newly designed suspension lamp that is 100% recyclable, functional, and also extremely decorative. The Air light is a physical manifestation of the exploration of ecological and design values. It features a dual lampshade design, that has the ability to produce a warm and inviting ambience which creates an amusing play between light and shadow, using its engraved laser cuts.

Throughout the entire process, from designing to production, considerable efforts were made to reduce Air’s impact on the environment. The light is made from Green Cast – an acrylic material that can be 100% recycled and recycles industrial waste and end-of-life products. Irrespective of how many cycles for which Green Cast has been utilized, it manages to retain and maintain its mechanical and thermal qualities, as well as aesthetics. Contardi lighting also applies the cream-colored finish of the lamp while it is being produced, in turn eliminating the lacquering phase, and reducing the lamp’s adversarial impact on the environment.

The Air light has an almost sculptural and ethereal feel to it. As you look closer at it, you feel that the lamp is floating both upwards and downwards, creating an intriguing visual illusion. The upper and lower LED lights emit a full glow, creating a warm, cozy, and peaceful aura in any room it is placed in.

Back in the 20th century, a lamp was just a lamp. It had a bulb, a switch, and either a battery or a cable that connected to a plug socket. Today, the term Lamp doesn’t have those simpler definitions. Meet the rather ironically named Boring Lamp – it comes with a power source as well as a built-in battery. It can be both height and angle-adjusted on its sleek base, or detached entirely to be used as a light baton for walking around the house, or a lightsaber for play-fights with your friends, siblings, or kids. The lamp features individually addressable LEDs that shine in a variety of colors (including gradients) and even respond to music, and if all that wasn’t enough, the Boring Lamp’s base comes with a 15W wireless charger for your phone and TWS earbuds.

The first thing that strikes you with the Boring Lamp (aside from that name) is the design. It’s slick, to say the least, and features a baton-shaped light attached to a cylindrical stand, with the ability to adjust its angle, tilt, and height. The entire lamp, base and all, is made from metal, giving it a minimalism that the modern tech enthusiast would appreciate, while also allowing the lamp to easily dissipate any heat generated by the 54 high-quality LEDs built into the lamp’s lighting system. The LEDs can be activated by a simple tap on the end of the lamp, and tapping again can let you cycle between warm, cool, gradient, and music-reactive modes, while long-tapping lets you adjust the LED brightness.

The Boring Lamp’s modular, magnetic design makes it easy to install, disassemble, and replace.

The slide rail design allows for height adjustment, and the lamp arm rotates 360° for perfect illumination, exactly where you need it.

The Boring Lamp’s modular magnetic design and unique lamp bracket make it easy to transform into a monitor light bar which you can place above your screen for a space-saving solution.

It comes with a built-in mic that syncs with the beat of your music or even clapping and stomps.

Colors can sync with the colors of movies and games- experience a new level of immersion like you’ve never seen before.

Can also use a battery module to transform into a portable Light Sword.

Where the Boring Lamp really differs from others is in its ability to detach from its base to become a battery-powered wireless light. When you don’t need a table lamp, just unplug the lamp element from its stand and use it as a standalone handheld torch instead of your smartphone flashlight. The lamp also plugs right into its base as a vertical pillar of light, or even onto desktop monitor mounts that let it double as a much more tailor-made light-bar that illuminates your keyboard and workspace without the base eating into your table’s real estate. This versatile approach to lighting allows the Boring Lamp to transform into jus the kind of light you need, whether it’s a warm light to read a book under, a cool light to keep you alert as you send that important email, or just a glowing, ever-changing ambient gradient that dances to music to keep the party going, and to keep your life anything EXCEPT boring…

The name Boring Lamp probably comes from the fact that it’s the antithesis of a ‘smart’ lamp that has its own app and interface. The Boring Lamp doesn’t require an app, given that it works just fine entirely on its own, providing versatility and functionality in the same heartbeat. The lamp does, however, charge your smartphone thanks to a 15W wireless charger built right into its base. Designed to work with a device kept at any orientation, the Boring Lamp’s base can fast-charge your phone or even your TWS earbuds simply by placing them in the charging zone.

Each Boring Lamp is built with a design that’s equal parts sleek and durable. The slim outer frame comes made from aluminum, offering a lightweight design while being able to rapidly dissipate heat, while the LEDs in the lamp are rated with a 60,000 hour lifespan, giving your Boring Lamp more than a decade’s worth of use. The Boring Lamp starts at $79 for its bare-basics version, although for $99 you can grab the lamp along with all its accessories, including the desktop monitor mount.

Rick Owens presented a collection of super cool-looking helmets at his Autumn Winter 2022 menswear show called ‘Strobe’, which was shown at the Palais de Tokyo during Paris Fashion Week. The three helmets are unique and feature single and dual-prong strobe lights protruding from their shell and double up as interesting floor lamps!

Designer: Rick Owens

American designer Rick Owens designed two helmets for the show, and they both feature a different light bar fixture, that has been inserted into and protrudes from the crown of the outer shell. Built from aluminum and fiberglass, the helmets are equipped with a rounded head with a shell that can be extended, providing coverage to the upper parts of the wearer’s chest and back. The helmets have a crown shape, as Owens drew inspiration from the forms he saw in Egyptian temples and tombs while spending time in Egypt. “Helmets have Dan Flavin-esque fluorescent bulbs set into crown shapes that I kept seeing in the Egyptian temples and tombs I toured last October,” said Owens.

The helmet’s extended shell which covers the wearer’s chest and shoulders in three parts, allows it to double up as a freestanding floor lamp. The extended shell functions as the legs of the lamp. The first lamp is called Amun, and it is available in the color black. It features a two-pronged lighting fixture, that has been placed within a trapezoidal frame. The second helmet is called Hedjet and is available in both black and white. It has been equipped with a single light bar fixture that protrudes out of the shell.

Owens’ helmets are pretty intriguing – both visually and functionally, as they signify an interesting and innovative crossover between apparel and lighting. His design is not only a fashionable wearable, but also a super functional fixture that you could actually use to light up your living space. When used as a lighting fixture, the helmets have a sculptural feel to them, allowing them to function as artistic and well-designed pieces for your living space. And when used as helmets, they have the ability to make an impressive and loud fashion statement.
